During the summer, we will be working with the “Common Lectionary.” This is the list of Bible
readings that is observed each Sunday by a majority of the Christian congregations around the
world.
July
4 Luke 10:1-11, 16-20 “Sent Out”
Jesus sends his followers out into the plentiful harvest. The early disciples and we are called to
prepare the way for Jesus and to carry out his ministry on earth.
11 Luke 10:25-37 "Paved with Good Intentions" (David Purcell)
Jesus surprises his listeners by who he identifies as our neighbors and how we are to love our
neighbors unconditionally.
18 Acts 8:26-37 “The Baptism Barrier”
Our silence is a barrier to people hearing about the good news of God in Christ Jesus.
25 Luke 11:1-13 Pastor Barb Duhlstine-Robarge preaching
The Lord’s prayer is a model of our prayer life and our relationship with God in Christ Jesus.
August
1 Luke 12:13-21 “Care and Feeding of the Money Tree”
We are called to lay up treasures in heaven, but we also have bills to pay. These verses give us
some insights into how we can be wise Christian stewards of our money.
8 Luke 12:32-40 Pastor Barb Duhlstine-Robarge preaching
Jesus calls his flock to fear not and to live expectantly. As Christians we face the challenge of
making these dynamics realities in our daily lives.
15 Luke 12:49-56 “Division”
We narrowly view Jesus as a peacemaker, and he is. There are times, however, when Jesus—
faith in Jesus—causes division. As Christians, we are called to live in love—even in the midst of
division.
22 Luke 13:10-17 “Love Trumps Rules”
We are sorely tempted to institute rules that limit our ability to love. In God’s kingdom love always
trumps rules.
29 Acts: 9:1-19 “The Paul Problem”
Christians who have been in the church a long time have difficulty seeing the difference faith is
Jesus has made in their lives. It is important for us to realize that Jesus has made a difference in
our lives and that people around us need these changes in their lives, also.
